Lady Charlotte is a very likable heroine - intelligent, beautiful, and kind with a bit of a temper. The hero is the youngest of five brothers and has learned to distinguish himself as a scholar and a care-for-nobody rake. They both evolve in this book - he learns to listen to his heart and she learns to be herself and not pretend to be "miss perfect." Their chemistry is excellent and I enjoy books that take place at country estates, focussing on village life, farming and running an estate. Some readers find it boring, but it's idyllic to me. I liked that the "villain" actually turns out to be fairly honorable in the end, and not totally a bad guy - that was kind of a twist on what authors typically write. Great addition to the Carsington series and I would read it again.

Loretta Chase creates characters in a way that few in this genre can match. She understands motivation and human behavior--so her characters have depth and individuality.

This book is the last of the Carsington series, the tales of a family of five brothers. Darius is the youngest, and true to the rules of birth order, he has trouble carving out a niche for himself, is in competition with formidable older brothers, and has difficulty winning the approval of his father. He develops a strong talent for scientific investigation and specializes in animal mating behavior. While he gains prestige and accolades in scientific circles, his father is unimpressed because Darius is not earning money through his work. His father gives him a decrepit estate to turn into a profit-making enterprise within a year.

When Darius meets Charlotte, he is the one person capable of noticing her odd "mating" behavior. She has perfected ways to avoid marriage, adapting her methods to each suitor by boring or irritating them and sometimes by quietly doing some matchmaking to send the gentlemen to more suitable partners. Intrigued, Darius begins to study Charlotte to learn her secrets. Along the way, he discovers that she is the one woman he has met who understands his hopes, difficulties, and sense of humor, and he is the one man who can appreciate and love her.

Darius does not swashbuckle or save Charlotte from highwaymen or other ploys from action-driven stories. Instead, the book carefully reveals the charming courtship of two reasonable, intelligent people. Humor, unusual settings, and amusing situations abound--those 1800s clothes are always a trial, aren't they? Yes, Darius accepts Charlotte's "secret" in a way that would not be typical of the time--but in a way reasonable for someone who views mating behavior from a scientific standpoint.

The ending is highly improbably for the time in which it occurs, but that is the reason for historical romance literature. It offers a way to escape the grating realities of the 21st century. How nice to think that two close families could defy convention and protect their own loved ones. The area where I live is rife with narrow-mindedness and prejudice. I hate to think what it must have been like in the early 19th century. Imagining that, once upon a time, those evils were overcome by loving families is encouraging.
Loretta Chase never disappoints. This isn't my favorite book by her, but it is worthy of her - it steers clear of the worst romance cliches, because it doesn't need them in order to build tension or generate heat. The writing is smooth and rich, characters are complex, there's a dose of fierce passion and of humor, too. A relationship between equals, a strong female lead, a good supporting cast.

That being said, it's not Loretta Chase's most powerful book - it doesn't have the sturm und drang of Lord of Scoundrels, or the hijinx and unexpected pathos of Mr. Impossible. It's a romance, not an adventure or a mystery - it takes place almost entirely over a period of a few weeks spent calmly in the country, and the two leads are mature, self-aware people who behave as such. There are complications, lives are changed, but even these earth-shattering events are rather domestic.

But one thing I like about Loretta Chase is that she tries new things. Among books of this kind, the ones that revolve around house parties and match making and the profitiability of country estates, with occasional references to pig breeding and wall hangings, this one is head and shoulders above the rest.
Not as good as the Carsington Family Series 1, 2, & 3. For a hardened rake, it didn't take Darius Carsington long to fall in love. At age 27, Lady Charlotte Hayward was adept in keeping men away but she sure dropped quickly after she met Darius. Speaking of dropping...why do all of the women in these books loose their balance and fall into the hero's arms? In this book, Charlotte fell pretty often! The plot is simple, the conflict resolution is simple. The villain wasn't really very villainous. I enjoyed the book ok, just not one of the better Loretta Chase books.
